What is Reiki?

The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century. Reiki is a natural healing energy that works on every level, not just the physical, and is understood to promote the body’s regenerative self- healing ability.

We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of wellbeing. If the balance of energy is affected, it knocks us “off balance” and we experience emotional and physical disturbances. There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki works at bringing us into balance and is believed therefore to reinforce the body’s natural ability to heal itself at all levels, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.

What A Session Includes

The practitioner will make the client comfortable on a couch, in a warm, comfortable, peaceful environment. The treatment is carried out with the client fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands gently in a series of positions, on or over the body and the client’s system draws in as much Reiki as is needed using it in whatever way is appropriate at that time. Reiki is deeply relaxing, has a calming effect and eases stress. It is always best to rest for a time after the treatment and to drink plenty of water to help the body to detox. The energy continues to work and the beneficial effects may be felt for some days after the treatment.

What To Expect From A Session

A session is usually 60 minutes long. A discussion will take place during an initial session and the client is given an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues they are experiencing and asked what they are hoping to achieve from their session. The client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes removed. The treatment is carried out with the client fully clothed, comfortable clothing is suggested. The practitioner will place their hands gently on or just above the client’s body and Reiki energy is then draw into the client’s system, using the energy in whatever way is appropriate at the time. If a client prefers not to be touched they can indicate this before they begin.

The session will then proceed with the Reiki Practitioner moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person’s head or feet. A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating. The beneficial effects may be felt for some days after treatment.
